RimWorld is a colony simulator where almost anything can happen. If the cold industry of Anno 1800 and the hopeless survival of Frostpunk are just too much, give Tropico 6 a spin. It’s hard overstating how much of a joy Tropico 6 is to play. Lobbyisto opens the doors to foreign leaders for some backdoor politics and helps you cover your corruption, and Spitter makes El Presidente a superstar on social media to attract celebrities and faction leaders to your island paradise. Tropico 6 is a joy to play, not only because it’s so silly but also because it’s a genuinely fun city builder. The world will know the name of your island - for better or worse. As the absolute ruler of your island, your job is to make lofty speeches to keep your citizens happy while exploiting the land and resources for all they’re worth. If you haven’t played a Tropico game, they are city builders where you’re allowed to do all of the devious, corrupt things you’re not supposed to do while building a city. If you’re looking for a different setting, Anno 1404 throws you into the age of colonization, and Anno 2070 looks forward to near-future industry.Įl Presidente is back in Tropico 6, giving you another chance to rule, manipulate, and build your own banana republic. We chose Anno 1800 not only because it’s the most recent but also because the setting captures the spirit of the gameplay. You’ll need to fight from time to time, but only to defend your industry. Instead of engaging in war or appeasing your citizens, Anno 1800 mainly tasks you with building and maintaining supply chains and then exploiting those supply chains to generate as much revenue as possible through trade. Like other Anno games, this one is focused on production and industry. From there, you’ll make your mark on the world with a network of trade routes, diplomatic agreements, and expeditions around the globe. Starting with a trade port and a small plot of land, you’ll attract farmers and workers to build your city from a farming village into a modern manufacturing powerhouse. Most of all, we really need a revamp of Tropico 2: Pirate Cove, because everything is better with pirates.Anno 1800 puts you at the beginning of the Industrial Age. I only hope Haemimont will eventually overhaul the now aging core gameplay to make it worth using all of the options at hand, rather than letting players stick with what worked before. It would’ve been nice if there had been more to Tropico 4 than just “more of the same ,” but criticisms of little actual change aside it’s still one of the most relaxing of its kind you’re likely to play all year. Best of all, it’s one of the few games that you can just as easily play lazily from your couch with a controller as you can play it hunched over your keyboard. Regardless of whether or not you desire innovation in Tropico 4, it remains one of the most enjoyable and charming city building games of current times. Have you never played a Tropico game before? Then Tropico 4 is the one to get, and once you understand what you’re supposed to do you’ll likely have a blast with it. If you are not in a hurry, it’s a no-brainer to pick up during a Steam sale. Did you like Tropico 3? Then you’ll like Tropico 4 just as much and you’ll appreciate the small changes, as long as you don’t expect a revolution in design compared to the previous game. Whether this sequel is worth your money comes down to a few simple questions. Each foreign faction will be influenced by the type of goods you export, and they offer plentiful optional objectives to improve relations and earn some more cash in the short or long run - occasionally forcing you to choose between antagonizing one of them for a benefit. and USSR still play a large role in managing foreign relations and staving off invasion, but the EU, Middle East, and China now play minor roles as well. Instead of semi-randomly going through a bunch of unrelated missions, there is now a somewhat consistent storyline that takes you from the ’50s to the end of the Cold War. The new 20-mission campaign does have a lot more to offer than before. Once your economy is built up, you’ll have little trouble winning any scenario just like in the previous game. You’ll still stick with tenements, farms and mines at first, and gradually work your way to a high school for churches and industry. If your old strategy for an early game economy worked in the past, it will most likely work in Tropico 4 as well. Because most new buildings simply serve as a slightly different or slightly more powerful version of existing buildings, veterans of Tropico 3 will find that very little has been changed in the core formula.
